Frequently Asked Questions
Our program is primarily designed for direct work between the psychologist and the athlete. However, when it is beneficial for the athlete’s progress, parents and coaches may also be involved, as recommended by the psychologist.
Champions are not made overnight, and the same is true for mental tr aining. While many athletes notice a positive shift in their mindset even after the very first session, lasting results come from consistent effort and practice. Building a strong foundation for your mental game takes time, patience, and regular training.
Physical, technical, and mental aspects together form the foundation of an athlete’s performance. If you train only the physical and technical sides, your preparation remains incomplete. Shooting is widely regarded as a mental sport—research and experience show that 70–80% of competition performance depends on the mind. That’s why in shooting sports mental training is not optional but it is the key to unlock your full potential.
The plan you receive will be customized and tailored to your requirements, skill level, and challenges. Of course, it may include some common exercises and techniques that are essential for building strong foundation skills in shooting. However, the majority of your plan will be personalized to your unique needs.
There is no fixed age to begin. As soon as you are passionate enough about shooting to pursue it professionally, you can start with the basic MTAP plan. The goal of this program is to encourage athletes to begin their mental training journey as early as possible. A large part of psychological development takes place at a young age, yet this is also the stage when mental training is most often overlooked. That’s why starting early is always a smart choice.
Every athlete is different, which is why we offer different programs. The number of sessions you need depends on your skill level, challenges, and requirements. We recommend starting with our free Mental Aspect Profiling (MAP) assessment, which provides key insights into your mental game. After that, you’ll have a free 10-minute call with our consultant, who will understand your needs better and suggest the most suitable program for you.
Mental training focuses on developing the mental skills athletes need to perform at their best. It is part of an athlete’s routine, helping them strengthen focus, confidence, and resilience to gain a competitive edge. A key part of mental training is identifying areas for improvement and working on them with specific techniques and strategies over time. While some exercises can be practiced individually, progress is much more effective under expert guidance—which is exactly what our MTAP program offers.
Counselling, on the other hand, involves a psychologist working more closely with the athlete to address deeper challenges such as performance blocks, limiting beliefs, or stress related to the sport. Unlike casual guidance from coaches or parents, counselling with a sports psychologist uses a structured and professional approach. This is where our MGAP program comes in, offering athletes focused support to overcome obstacles and unlock their best performance.
The challenges athletes face in training and competition are real—and that’s exactly what our programs are designed to address. We use research-based, proven techniques to create lasting results. To make sure the progress is measurable, we begin with the MAP assessment, which helps you understand your mental game even before committing to the program. Your MAP report acts as a baseline, and after discussing it with you, the psychologist focuses on specific targeted areas. This way, you can track real improvement over time, rather than just experiencing a temporary boost in motivation. Thousands of athletes worldwide have benefited from similar methods, which is why we are confident it will help you too.
The way our program works, we do not offer trial sessions. This is because the real benefits of mental training often appear after a few sessions or through consistent practice with the plan provided. Judging the effectiveness of the program in just one session wouldn’t be fair, as it takes time to see meaningful and lasting results.
We highly recommend sticking with the program for a longer period to achieve permanent results. However, if due to any circumstances you are unable to continue, you can easily pause your program by reaching out to our team.
At Thriving Athletes, we are committed to delivering the best services to our athletes. Before designing our programs, we interviewed over 100 shooters across different experience levels to understand their real needs and challenges. One issue that stood out was that many shooters who had visited sports psychologists felt their psychologist didn’t fully understand shooting as a sport. This is understandable—shooting is unique, with limited research and demands that differ greatly from other sports.
To address this concern, our qualified sports psychologists and mental performance coaches are experienced shooters themselves. They have faced the same challenges, know the sport in great depth, and bring both firsthand experience and professional expertise to help athletes perform at their best.
The Mental Training Assistance Program (MTAP) is designed for athletes at beginner to intermediate levels. It focuses on building the foundation of mental skills—such as concentration, confidence, motivation, and basic coping strategies. It is an assisted mental training program that helps athletes build a strong foundation and overcome the challenge of not knowing how to practice mental training on their own. MTAP includes one session a month with a psychologist, along with guided and monitored mental training to support consistent progress.
The Mental Growth Advantage Program (MGAP), on the other hand, is for athletes at intermediate to advanced levels. It takes a more in-depth and personalized approach, offering three sessions a month with a psychologist. MGAP focuses on identifying and addressing individual performance barriers, mental blocks, or limiting beliefs, while also developing advanced psychological skills to help you perform at your best under pressure. MGAP also includes counselling support to athletes refine their mental game and perform at their best when it matters most.
At Thriving Athletes, we follow a strict confidentiality policy. Your sessions with the psychologist are completely private, and no personal information is ever shared with anyone. In some cases, sessions may be recorded for quality monitoring by a senior psychologist, but this is done only with your prior knowledge and consent.
Our psychologists are trained in a wide range of tools and techniques that are widely studied and applied in sports psychology. The choice of approach depends on the athlete’s needs, the situation, and the psychologist’s professional judgment. Commonly practiced approaches include Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Goal Setting and Motivation strategies, Mindfulness, Relaxation and Arousal Management techniques, Positive Psychology, Visualization/Imagery training, and Emotional Regulation strategies. This ensures every athlete gets a mix of scientific methods and practical strategies tailored to their journey.
Yes. We provide basic support to all athletes whenever they feel it is required. If an athlete wishes to have a full session during competition days, they can easily purchase a paid add-on session and schedule it with us.

If you’ve tried mental training before but couldn’t stick with it, you’re not alone. Many shooters start with good intentions but end up following the wrong approach or a generic plan that doesn’t match their specific needs. When they don’t see results, they lose motivation and quit.
At Thriving Athletes, we solve this by starting with a comprehensive psychological assessment to identify your unique concern areas. This is followed by an individual discussion with a psychologist and a fully customized mental training plan designed around your needs and goals. This way, you see meaningful progress and stay motivated to continue. To keep you accountable, our team also connects with you from time to time to support you throughout your journey.
